Draped in red and accompanied by a cardboard cutout dog with one of his eyes on his face and the other on the tip of his tail, Australian musical artist Bertie Blackman came out to New York City commanding notice. Blackman, whose voice is bold and delivery is quirky, crafts an unpredictable reality, coupling seemingly unlike elements such as soft xylophone and heavy drumming to create moments of complete synchronicity. Upon Blackman’s recent return from touring with Gotye –a tour that landed Gotye nominations for three Grammies and one 2013 BRIT Awards– ROX is bringing out Bertie Blackman mid-January 2013 for G’Day USA, otherwise known as Australia Week. ROX is a new gallery space launched by Emerald Fitzgerald and co- director Alexander George Clark.

The space, located in the West Village and scheduled to open Valentines Day, 2013, intends on not only representing visual artists, but also on helping a select group of artists who work in nontraditional medium to advance their praxis. ROX supports a broad range of contemporary artists whose mediums range from paint, to music, to magic. This aim is well exampled by a special music and art event at B_Space Thursday, January 17th, hosted by ROX. The event at B_Space, an Australian lifestyle space in Soho, presents Bertie Blackman’s music amidst the work of other Aussie artists like Anthony Lister, whose mixed media figurative art displays internationally.

Bertie Blackman made her New York debut at The Delancey on January 15th, and can be found at various venues this month to simultaneously gain support for her recently launched fourth album, Pope Innocent X, celebrate G’Day USA, and model the widened definition of artist as articulated by ROX:
