"The Best Art In The World"
By PAUL LASTER August, 2020
Daytripping on the East End of Long Island to see art, Renée Riccardo and I arrived in East Hampton and headed straight to Newton Lane, where we visited Van de Weghe Fine Art, Skarstedt, Sotheby's, Leslie Feeley and Eric Firestone to catch group shows of blue-chip artists—including Andy Warhol, Eric Fischl, Lynda Benglis and George Condo—and then to Harper’s Books and Michael Werner for one and two person shows, featuring paintings and watercolors by Alejandro Cardenas and bronzes and paintings A.R. Penck and Florian Krewer, respectively.
Next stop was Pace for a show of drawings from Donald B. Marron’s collection and a peak at an Anish Kapoor disk at Lisson, before heading to LongHouse Reserve. Walking the grounds at the reserve in the rain was refreshing as we chanced upon sculptures and installations by Dale Chihuly, Ai Weiwei, Sol Lewitt, Will Ryman, Sui Jianguo and Yoko Ono and exotic plantings woven throughout the lush, green environment.
Crawling back through traffic to Southampton, we liked works by Rashid Johnson, Ed Clark and Louise Bourgeois at Hauser & Wirth, Van Hanos and Donald Baechler at Phillips and Kate Clark at Southampton Art Center before checking out some shops, where we stumbled upon a Martin Munkácsi photo presented at JHB Gallery at Carleen Ligozio and Barry Flanagan featured by Di Donna Galleries at Selavy.
Driving back toward Brooklyn, we stopped in Bellport to check out Taylor Anton White’s solo show at Marquee Projects and a group show curated by Maureen Mahony at The Storefront in advance of our final stop in Setauket, where Renée was making a studio visit with Tali Hinkis of LoVid. WM
