Toronto born artist Deborah Grant came to New York in 1972 settling at Coney Island. New York's melting pot of races and religions play a part in her dialouge. Grant was brought up Catholic but employs different aspects of Judeo-Christian and Catholic ideologies in her art. In this body of work she re-organizes and appropriates the symbology of art history and religion, mixing them together. The pieces are collage on wood and her ideas work nicely in this medium delivering the message with great force. The result is narratives that stray from stereotypes of race, gender, politics and faith. NB
