"The Best Art In The World"
Art Southampton
By GREGORY DE LA HABA, AUG 2014
The beautiful and the beautifully rich were out in full force during Art Southampton's VIP opening July 24th. The usual suspects were well represented: Banksy, Mr. Brainwash, Damien Hirst and Warhol, all had multitudes of their multiples offered for sale to the fashionable, well-heeled, wide-eyed masses. But inbetween all the glitter, splattered paint and pomp of the art world's darlings, there was some damn good art for the taking: Andrew Erdos' glass sculptures at Claire Oliver, Greg Haberny's 'Art World Is Fucked' commentary at Catinca Tabacaru, Axel Crieger's digital manipulations at Amstel Gallery, Sasha Meret's 'time-travel' constructions at AP Contemporary and Jeff Muhs new paintings at McNeill Art Group.
Also, found outside the big tent and brought to you by Dorian Grey Gallery and Martino Auto Concepts was the Ferrari Art Car painted by legendary street artist Crash. Put simply: the car was freakin' hot, and for a cool half-a-mil, it too was up for grabs. And with Ruinart Champagne flowing freely all evening, this midsummer night soiree made for a fun night out in the Hamptons. Now ask me if they were buying.
