Dallas Arts Week

By PAUL LASTER, APR. 2015

Now in its seventh successful year, the Dallas Art Fair was once again the focal point for Dallas Arts Week, which saw opening receptions, galas, concerts and collection viewings around the city.

Our week kicked off on Wednesday at the Power Station for the opening of Belgian artists Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys’ exhibition “The Dirty Puppets of Pomerania,” followed by a reception for big solo shows by David Salle and Nate Lowman and projects by Anila Quayaam Agha and FriendsWithYou at the Dallas Contemporary.

Thursday brought visits to the Rose Collection and Pump House, the Dallas Art Fair preview at the Fashion Industry Gallery and luncheon at Stephan Pyles, followed by French artist Claude Rutault’s interaction involving folded paintings with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In the evening, we were back at the fair for the prominently attended preview gala.

There were more collection visits on Friday and then the MTV RE: DEFINE gala dinner and art auction, where Michael Craig-Martin was honored, at the Goss-Michael Foundation. Saturday’s highlights, meanwhile, were a visit to the amazing exhibition space The Warehouse, for an incredible show of abstract art, and the delightful Art Ball 50 at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Sunday, which should have been a day of rest, provided a return to the Dallas Art Fair for the outdoor performance “Border in Motion” by Marcin Dudek, a tour of the Joule Hotel’s art collection and a wrap-up party—dubbed The Eye Ball—on a lot opposite the hotel’s hot downtown spot
