April 2013: Whitehot Watch

By Jason Stopa, Consulting Editor

Spring is finally here, and with it, a string of new exhibits. We've scouted out a handful of must-see shows. Stanley Whitney's 3rd solo show with Team Gallery demonstrates the artist's ongoing interest in gridded squares and bands of sophisticated color. Painter Painter at Walker Art Center brings together a cross section of familiar, contemporary abstract painters whose practices are influenced by everything from poetry to fashion. Tauba Auerbach's show entitled Tetrachromat at Wiels, investigates retinas, receptors and the visible spectrum with a spread of paintings and sculptures. For this show, Auerbach evolves her use modulated color gradients with illuminating results. If you're in the Hamptons this month go see Ted Gahl at Halsey McKay. And at the tail end of April, Trudy Benson will debut at Horton Gallery on Chrystie St. A top list follows.
