ARMORY WEEK NYC OPENING - WHITEHOT MAGAZINE PRESENTS ALFREDO MARTINEZ - ONE NIGHT ONLY

By NOAH BECKER September 18th, 2026 at 5:14pm EST

During Armory Week in NYC, Whitehot Magazine presents a one-night-only exhibition dedicated to my late friend, the notorious and unforgettable New York artist Alfredo Martinez. You are invited.

The evening will include a solo exhibition of Alfredo’s work and the launch of  The United States vs Alfredo Martinez hardcover book by Artvoices Books celebrating his art and life. During the event, collector Ronald Sosinski and I will give a talk about Alfredo, his work, his complicated history, and our experiences with him in the New York art world.

I first met Alfredo in New York City at one of his many exhibitions. We became fast friends and eventually began curating exhibitions together. Alfredo was an extraordinary character - funny, unpredictable, intelligent, and deeply immersed in the strange ecosystem of New York art.

Over the years, we organized a number of pop-up exhibitions around the city and later found ourselves working with and around well-known figures including Academy Award–winning actor and artist Adrien Brody, Anna Delvey and Ben Stiller.

As our friendship developed, I also learned more about Alfredo’s notorious past, including the scandals surrounding the Basquiat drawings he was convicted of forging. That history inevitably became part of the mythology around him, but it can also overshadow something much more interesting: Alfredo was an artist with a visual language entirely his own.

That is the focus of this exhibition.

The works being presented are Alfredo Martinez’s own visions - an eccentric universe populated by guns, skulls, robots, strange machines, fantastical figures, and recurring symbols that became part of his unmistakable vocabulary. Beneath the notoriety was an artist who drew constantly and possessed a dark, obsessive imagination.

This exhibition is both a celebration and a remembrance of a friend, collaborator, and singular New York character. Alfredo lived a complicated life, but he left behind a body of work that deserves to be looked at on its own terms.

I hope you’ll join us for this one-night-only event:
September 26th from 6–9 PM at 178 Bleecker Street to see the work, launch the book, share some stories, and remember Alfredo Martinez.
