May 6th to June 4th 2023 - Open by appointment
Philiput Art Space
1901B Washington Boulevard, Philadelphia PA 19147
Exhibition Opening Reception: Saturday May 6th 5:30 - 8:30 pm

Philiput Art Space presents a solo exhibition of cartographically inspired works by celebrated Uruguayan American artist Ana Vizcarra Rankin, MFA. Ana Vizcarra Rankin makes drawings, paintings and sculpture about travel and cartography. Using tactics such as reorientation of the world map and renaming of the pictured spaces to reflect decolonization and equity towards nature, Ana invites the viewer to question which
aspects of our perceived reality may be negotiable. For Reality in Quotes, Philiput will be featuring an array of works by Vizcarra Rankin that include her large maps, map collages, graphite drawings and tracings of space, ocean life and subatomic particle dispersion, intermingled with science fiction visualizations of interstellar spillways and spacetime reaction chambers which highlight the importance of our sense of human scale and the limitations of our senses and understanding. Born in Uruguay and raised in both South and North America, Vizcarra Rankin has exhibited extensively, and her work is held in numerous permanent collections, including Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Brandywine River Museum of Art, Uruguay Cultural Foundation for the Arts, Peoria Riverfront Museum, Brooklyn Art Library, and Print Council of Australia. Awards include a Project Stream Grant from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and funding from Creative Capital x Skoll. Rankin participated in the first TrueQue Artist Residency in Ayampe Ecuador, was a Barnes Artist in Residence in Umbertide Italy, a resident artist at Liliput
Experimental in Puebla Mexico, and is the founder of BrobDinGnag International, a curatorial exchange program focused on diversity and inclusion. She received her MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and BA in art history from Temple University. Philiput Art Space is an extension of Liliput Experimental, a wondrous art space; a place of peace and beauty, committed to collaborating with contemporary visual artists throughout the world. WM
