Obituary: Michael Anderson In Remembrance (1968-2020)

New York collage artist Michael Anderson, (1968 - 2020).

By PAUL RODGERS August, 2020

It is with great personal sadness that I note the death of Michael Anderson this past week at his home in New York City. Michael Anderson was an artist of extraordinary energy and exceptional originality. Situating himself in the tradition of collage, from its inception in Cubism, through the post-war European Affichistes (décollage), and beyond, Anderson reinvented the medium with a flexibility of composition that no one had dreamed of prior to him. Deeply engaged in the life and urban scene of New York City in the 1990’s and across the early decades of the new century, Anderson will be remembered as the chronicler of modern life in his time and place, which is to say the urban environment, notably of the New York metropolis.

Paul Rodgers/9W was happy to give Michael his first two commercial exhibitions in New York in 2002 & 2004. Michael remained a close friend of the gallery, which continued to install his work with the artist’s collaboration over the succeeding years. WM
